Character's name: Maydril val Mandrian
Character's DW: [personal profile] drowpaladin
Character's canon: OC.

Brief (around 300 words) personality outline of your character:

Maydril is descended from Servryn nobility; as a future Knight, she knows she has a responsibility to her land and people and takes that role seriously. That said, she's still a teenager, and is equally desirous of having fun and showing off a bit.  At heart, she is a good, moral, decent person--while she may not be certain of things working out or being okay in the end, she will do her very best to make it happen. She is not quite as happy-go-lucky as her father Nicholas was as a young man--but Maydril val Mandrian is not as dour or serious as her drow mother, Phaelirra, is, either.  Though her serious mien, when she adopts it, is drawn very much from her mother's influence. Sometimes, she can take it a bit too far.

She is somewhat religious; her mother was not a priestess of the drow goddess Eilistraee, but served as handmaiden in the temple in her youth, and Maydril followed that path, though it was in the temple of the goddess her father worships.  Elee is a goddess of idealism; equality, tolerance, and freedom are all watchwords of said goddess' faith. While Maydril views herself clearly on the side of good, her faith makes her a bit more open-minded about others, as well as the realization that acts that are not clearly good can make for greater good.

May has a playful streak, which will include smiles for everyone and attempts to cheer up the grouchy sorts. While she firmly believes in doing her duty, whatever that might be, she also believes that "all work and no play makes May a dull girl". It also applies to other people. Sign her up for the hedonism committee--though she'd probably only be a part-time member.

Brief (around 500 words) history and background of your character. Explain where they cut off from the timeline:

Maydril val Mandrian is the firstborn child of a landless Knight; the ambassadorial envoy to a bustling nexus-point city, and a former noble drow female. She spent her early childhood either being taken to the Temple of the Dark Lady of the Dance, where her mother served as handmaiden (and she was doted on by all the drow females), or spending time at her father's knee, watching and learning about diplomacy. She excelled at her basic studies--languages, arithmatic, that sort of thing. On her fourth birthday, her parents gifted her with a practice blade, and between the Temple weapon-masters and the Embassy's swordsmen, she began to learn the art of warfare.

At the age of twelve, when her magic first started expressing itself, she was Tested. Found to have the same magic as her father, she was squired to one of the Embassy's Paladin Lords, the Lady Erzebet von Rioght. She took to her magical education like a duck takes to water, though her teacher did her best to match her learning to her abilities. This is also when she was gifted with the two-handed sword she named Rhadianz.

The next year seemed a whirl of learning the invocations of Holy magic, the meditations of Life and Psi, and learning about her father's homeland, the Kingdom of Anberas (Servryn is the continent and the name of the Alliance of over fifty-eight countries). Her first taste was one of racism, because elves are quite rare in Anberas, preferring to stay to their forests, and half-elves even more so because of that. She got to see the Knights Academy, and while she was touring, met a young White Knight by the name of Everry von Dalis. She was instantly smitten, though their relationship was a rocky one to start--he believed that her interest was out of pity. Everry's older brother, a Paladin named Farren, was the epitome of a young Paladin, and he thought that Maydril looked up to him, and would never truly notice him.

It took her a year to convince him he was wrong. Unfortunately, by that time, one of the smaller Anberan counties was threatening to secede from the Kingdom. Nicholas, Maydril's father, was arranging to send her back home for her own safety, while he and Lady Erzebet would go to al Shiana county and attempt to quell the disturbance there. Maydril refused to go home, arguing that it might be a good chance to see if she could use what she'd been taught. Her father acquiesced, and while the adults worked to have diplomatic concessions made, Maydril met the crown prince. He, to her chagrin, was smitten, and to the uproar of his court and his mother, the Queen Regent, attempted to woo Maydril. She wasn't thrilled about the prospect, either. After a good bit of rebuffing and the appearance of the daughter of al Siana county's lord, May set the prince and the girl up. Luckily for her, they hit it off. The betrothal paves the way for a peace accord between the Kingdom of Anberas and its rogue county.

This is where Maydril will be picked up by Stacy.

Sample post (just a general, everyday, puttering-around-the-ship post; please include a snippet of dialogue):

Maydril decided that the Academy really, really needed something like the Sensoriums, when she got back home. With all the magic at the Knights' command, certainly there was someone who should be able to create something like this. It was a magical place, truly. From her memories of the Academy, it had recreated the grand plaza where the Warmaster held his classes on swordplay. Maydril herself was facing off against a training dummy, Rhadianz' hilt warm in her hand. The grasp of her familiar sword was reassuring, here in this so-strange face, and she could almost hear Warmaster de Veris' voice telling her to begin.

"Yes, sir. I understand." With those few brief words, she raised her claymore, and moved forward into a long sweep that brought her center of gravity closer in line with that of the sword. Had the dummy not been made of wood,, there would have been a good chunk of flesh taken from it, perhaps even the bone beneath shattered. As it was, it was like an axe had taken out a hunk of log, sending splinters flying everywhere.

"All right, Maydril. That's quite enough, thank you."

If the character has magic, mutant, or otherwise metahuman abilities, please explain what they are and outline EXACTLY how they function, as their powers may not work due to the nature of the ship or may need to be limited somehow:

Paladins of Servryn have three different 'schools' of magical ability. Life, Psi, and Holy. At fourteen, Maydril has a good grasp of the basics. This means that under Life magic, she can do some body alteration, and a good amount of healing, as she has done some deeper studying into the healing abilities the Life school grants. She should be able to speak to animals and plants as well, but she has had no real results speaking to plants, and animals are hard to understand for her.

The extent of her knowledge of Psi magic is a firm ability with her own mental shields, and telepathy. She has the potential to learn hostile projection, but she has not had any training in those abilities as of Stacy grabbing her.

Maydril's Holy magic knowledge extends mostly to shields against offensive magic or physical attacks. She also has knowledge of blessings of various types, notably against other types of Knight magic. Since the other three schools are Elemental, Black, and Death magic, there's probably some cover for many of the spells other characters might be using. Then again, May's abilities are basic, so it's doubtful she'd be winning any magical battles any time soon. Most Holy (and Black and Death) spells involve spell invocations for casting. Life and Psi involve meditation. Elemental uses a complex rune-building system. Maydril's powers are strictly under Life, Holy, and Psi though, as a Paladin she cannot access the other three schools at all.

Because her mother was of drow nobility, Maydril has two magic-like abilities. She can levitate for short periods of time. This would be handy if she, say, had to jump off a three or four story building, but would not be likely to work off of anything larger. Or she's going to wind up hurt. In theory, she's supposed to be able to float up with it as well. However, she's not convinced she can, despite seeing full-blooded drow, males and females, doing so. Her second ability is faerie fire, which is mostly useful in darkness like a sort of light-based smoke flare. She did use it to light up the lace on the Duchess of al Shiana's dress, and make the Crown Prince of Anberas notice her. In short, it's not a damaging ability.

As a half-elf, her senses are a bit better than a normal human's. She is immune to sleep spells, but psionic attacks or a good old rap to the back of the head will knock her out easily.

Non-superhuman special abilities of note: She's had ten years of swordplay training, so she's pretty good with her own weapon. Being squired to Erzebet von Rioght, Paladin Lord, has also ensured that she's learned quite a bit of diplomacy as a matter of course. This has only been reinforced by her journeys with her father and her mentor.
